Inspiration to Pick You Back Up During Tough Job Search Times

My passion centers around supporting job seekers, but I particular enjoy witnessing how the application of good resources, positive direction, and strong affirmation can bring about productive change.

With this in mind, I’ve gathered some of my favourite career quotes and top tips that I want to share with anyone currently facing a job search funk.

Keep in mind that you are not alone in your journey, and myself – along with so many other career professionals – are here to cheer you on!

Favourite career quote:

“Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark” – Jay Danzie

This is my favourite career quote for so many reasons.

Ultimately, I think it speaks volumes to the value behind networking.  As a job seeker, or even just a person, a first impression means everything. If we can be cognizant of the fact that every single interaction we have can have an impact on our job search success (in the present and leading into the future) the door of opportunity will always be present.

An analogy I use with my clients when presenting this quote, is that you never know who you might run into, so always treat people with respect. The guy that you flashed the finger to this morning during a road rage incident might be the very gentleman you interview with at noon. You just never know.

Top job search tip:

Similar to the point above, treat every experience and interaction as a networking opportunity for your career success. With this in mind, always carry a business networking card.

My reason for the business networking card is simple.  That struggling mother you help carry groceries might be the wife of a CEO (or even the CEO herself) of your top target organization. If she appreciates your efforts and asks for your info – you’ll have it ready.

The janitor cleaning the washrooms at your current company might be training in the same area you are targeting.  He might have contacts already lined up that he is willing to share.  Striking up a conversation with him, and sharing your business card, could create unforeseen opportunities.

Your hairdresser might know of opportunities in your target market because she speaks to a LOT of people every day.  Giving her your card to pass around could help produce new contacts that support your search.  And so on…

With a business card handy you can connect, share, and promote your value…. never missing out.

Words of encouragement for struggling, frustrated job seekers:

Never give up! There are a few quotes and acronyms I refer clients to when they are struggling in their job search and feel like the next opportunity will never arrive.

The first is:

“When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us”

~ Alexander Graham Bell

Second:

“If you FAIL, never give up because F.A.I.L. means ‘First Attempt in Learning’. END is not the end; in fact E.N.D. means ‘Effort Never Dies’. If you get NO as an answer, remember N.O. means ‘Next Opportunity’”. ~ Abdul Kalam
